What is Marijuana Wax?

What separates cannabis wax and other types of THC concentrates such as honey oil or budder is the fact it’s made by extracting the oil through butane. The substance looks similar to ear wax in both color and texture. Since marijuana wax is a type of THC concentrate that means it has a very high potency of THC. It’s found that most cannabis wax contains 60 percent or more of THC than traditional leafy marijuana.

THC is a type of cannabinoid that creates the hallucinogenic and “high” feeling a marijuana user gets. It tends to be a rule of thumb that the more THC there is in cannabis, the stronger the psychedelic effects are. Cannabis wax is commonly ingested through e-cigarettes but can also be used in water pipes also known as oil rigs when heated up at a high temperature.  Some melt cannabis wax into butter so it can be made into edibles.

How is Cannabis Wax Made?

Marijuana wax can be made with either butane hash oil or isopropyl alcohol. When made with butane hash oil, the dried marijuana is put into an open-ended tube. A person will then cover one end with a filter and the other will be sealed closed. They will then force the butane has oil through the filter to separate THC molecules from the marijuana plant.

If the wax was made with isopropyl alcohol, then the dried marijuana is submerged in alcohol for a set period. The alcohol is then heated to an extremely high temperature. Once the alcohol is evaporated, it should leave behind the sticky substance known as marijuana wax. Although some do make cannabis wax with alcohol, it’s likely to be made with butane.

What Are the Penalties for Possessing Marijuana Wax in FL?

It’s important to understand that Florida has different penalties for THC concentrates than it does for marijuana. That is because Florida law doesn’t consider cannabis concentrates as part of the marijuana plant. The law states that sap, stalks and all parts that aren’t the flower of the cannabis plant are not considered to be marijuana, but instead a schedule I drug. Because of this, THC concentrates have the same harsh penalties as another schedule I drug such as heroin. However, marijuana is only charged as a misdemeanor since legislation was passed in attempt to decriminalize the substance.

Possession of any amounts of THC concentrates is a third-degree felony, which is punishable by:

  • Up to five years in prison; and
  • A possible fine of up to $5,000.

In Florida it’s also unlawful to sell, deliver or manufacture cannabis wax. Possessing more than three grams of THC concentrates with intent to sell is a third-degree felony. The charges, however, can be enhanced based on where the crime was committed.

If you were arrested for using, manufacturing or selling cannabis wax in one of these places, then your charges will be enhanced to a second-degree felony.

  • Within 1,000 feet of:
    • A sect of public housing;
    • A child care facility between the hours of 6 AM and 12 AM;
    • A community center or park;
    • An assisted living facility;
    • A convenience business;
    • A college, university or other educational institution;
    • A church or house of worship; or
    • An assisted living facility

A second-degree felony can lead to the following maximum penalties:

  • Up to 15 years in prison; and
  • A possible fine of up to $10,000.
